With the Dynamic Art Project, I aimed to represent the Lawrence Heights community in its complexities and many dimensions.
I engaged with Toronto’s Lawrence Heights community to create a dynamic, multimedia map along with drawn and painted portraits of established and beloved community members.
I also taught clay and printmaking classes to Lawrence Heights Middle School students, who then contributed artworks to the piece.

Student Work
My own artistic practice is so greatly enhanced by spending time as a teacher reviewing the ‘basics’ with fledgling artists! In a series of lessons, I guided grade 6 students to create drawings and prints as well as ceramic representations of local flora and fauna. The students took to clay and I added two extra lessons so that they could take home their own clay bowls.
Community Portraits
The non-teaching aspect of the project was a celebration of community members. These are the everyday people who interact with students and their families.
The student’s work and my own have been collaged together into a giant map that resides in the Lawrence Heights Middle School. As a whole, the project celebrates the familiar, personal, and grounded community life in all its minutiae.
I am grateful to Art Starts and Platform A for funding the project and to Lawrence Heights Middle School and students.
